BERNARDI'S BACK IN LINE TOP BLOCKER READY AFTER INJURY.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

NEWHALL - After Hart High offensive lineman Joe Bernardi missed all of last season because of a knee injury, nobody is happier to be playing football again than he is.

The junior, expected to be among the Foothill League's top blockers last year, tore Tore can refer to:

Without Bernardi, the offensive line might have been Hart's only area of weakness, as defensive pressure from Mission Viejo Mission Vi·e·jo

might have been the difference in Hart's season-ending Southern Section Div. II championship loss.

``It's been a long road back. It's good to be here again,'' Bernardi said. ``I'm a full go and ready to roll. My knee is 100 percent.''

Hart running back Dan Howell believes Bernardi's return could make all the difference.

``Joe is spectacular. You can definitely tell the difference when he's in there,'' Howell said. ``He was dedicated about his recovery, and he kept on the right track. He's worked hard, and I think he's going to be a big contributor for us this year.''

Quarterback Sean Norton is happy to have Bernardi back, as well. Norton had a huge season last year - 4,014 yards, 35 touchdown passes - but perhaps he can have an even bigger season now that the line is intact. Fellow starting blocker Zac Zimmerman also has rebounded from a knee injury and is back in the lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. .

``It's perfect to have Joe and Zac back. They bring a lot to our line,'' Norton said. ``We needed them. It's been a long time for Joe, especially, because his last game was the Saugus game when we were freshmen together.''

What impressed Norton was the way Bernardi kept his poise while recovering. Of course Bernardi was frustrated frus·trate

``Joe is just a very level-headed guy,'' Norton said.

Bernardi's sister, Hart softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  catcher Briana, said her brother's injury was ``emotional for the whole family.'' But for her, the remarkable thing was that her brother never complained.

``If you think about it, a year and a half away from football because of an injury is a pretty long time. It's hard to realize how long,'' she said. ``I think football was on Joe's mind about 90 percent of the time, but for so long all he could do was work out and try to get healthy again. But the whole time he never complained. He just went to therapy. It was tragic because he hurt his knee in warm-ups, doing a little drill he's done 100 times.

``I'm just so happy he's back. He's been wanting to come back so bad, which was been kind of sad. But now he's doing awesome.''

Perhaps the elder Bernardi will recruit his son soon. Certainly, Joe has all the tools expected of a Division I college recruit: At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, he's muscular yet leaner than most high school blockers, which means he has plenty of potential to get bigger. He also has fine technique and a ``hitter's mentality men·tal·i·ty

.''

Considering he's been away from football for a season and is just a junior, Bernardi still must prove himself. But judging by others' impressions of him, that's merely a formality formality, in chemistry: see chemical equilibrium; concentration. .

All he needs is a chance, and now he's got one.
