BERNARD FLYNN'S WEEKEND VERDICT: John will return to management.Byline: BERNARD FLYNN Bernard Flynn is a retired inter-county Irish Gaelic footballer for County Meath in Ireland. He enjoyed much success play inter-county football in the eighty's & early ninety's on the Meath team's managed by Sean Boylan. For Meath he usually played at Full Forward. JOHN Maughan resigned this week as Mayo manager. A little quicker than most had expected but not a total surprise. It was a brave and honest decision particularly in the present managerial environment, where over-staying your welcome is more the norm. Mayo have appeared in an All-Ireland Final, won a Connaught Championship and appeared in the National League semi-final. Not bad for a team who have been down in the doldrums doldrums (dŏl`drəmz) or equatorial belt of calms, area around the earth centered slightly north of the equator between the two belts of trade winds. for a few years. John is not everybody's cup of tea, but he has given an enormous amount to football. Winning a Munster Title with Clare in 1992 was a piece of history he should be very proud of. To come back for a second stint to Mayo was a brave decision. The next appointment is probably the most important the Mayo Board will ever make. They have momentum now but they must build on it. John did a very good job with limited resources. But to use his own words "the one that got away" was 1996 against Meath. It still hurts him and it's this hurt which will drive him to, once again, become involved in management. I have no doubt, because when all is said and done - he genuinely loves Gaelic football Gaelic football: see under football. Gaelic football Irish sport, an offshoot of the violent medieval game mêlée. In the modern game, sides are limited to 15 players. ! |
