``I believe this is a fair compromise,'' said Anthony Michaelides, who lives on nearby Cross Creek Cross Creek may refer to:

``Many residents didn't want any restriction at all.''

In February, the Santa Clarita City Council approved placing signs on Copper Hill and Bouquet Canyon Road to prevent drivers from using Benz as a thoroughfare. The signs on Copper Hill would have restricted traffic from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Instead, county officials made it 4:30 to 6:30.

Benz was built under county control decades ago, before the city of Santa Clarita was incorporated. More than two dozen homes front Benz, which became a cut-through when Copper Hill Drive opened to Bouquet Canyon Road. Benz has handled about 3,300 car trips a day.

Long-time Benz resident Tony Natoli, who urged city officials for three years to take action, questioned county supervisors' move.

``I'm not sure if it was a win or giveaway,'' he said. ``It's like a nightmare where you can't get a toehold or up a ladder.'' He said he is taking a wait-and-see attitude but will push for a city backup plan to further restrict permissible turns if the Benz traffic does not subside to fewer than 2,000 trips a day.

Michaelides is pushing hard for the gate, which he said a majority of the impacted residents want.

City and county traffic engineers will monitor the traffic for about three months to see if the signs are helping, said City Traffic Engineer Andrew Yi. They will consider extending the restriction to four hours if needed.
