LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez praised an important European result for Liverpool - but insisted his side must play much better.

The Reds started their Champions League campaign with an impressive victory in Marseille thanks to two goals from skipper Steven Gerrard Steven George Gerrard MBE (IPA: ['stiːvn 'dʒɛɹɑːd]) (born 30 May, 1980, Whiston, Merseyside) is an English football player. He is the captain of Liverpool, where he wears the number 8 shirt. .

But afterwards the midfielder admitted Liverpool were not at their best, and Benitez described the performance as "careless".

Boss Benitez said: "I am really pleased with the result because this is a hard place to come and win, but we know that we can play better and we have to play better.

"We have to improve in defence because too many times already this season we in the second half, we didn't pass well enough," he said. "As a team we weren't good enough, other than the back five."

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari's first taste of the Champions League was also sweet as Chelsea produced a vintage performance.

Lampard, who started the rout, said: "I'm playing well and scoring goals and I'm part of a good team."

The Blues sent the men from the heart of the French vineyards home with sore heads as Bordeaux were outclassed from first minute to last.
