For the first quarter, net sales Net Sales The amount a seller receives from the buyer after costs associated with the sale are deducted. Notes: This amount is calculated by subtracting the following items from gross sales: merchandise returned for credit, allowances for damaged or missing goods, freight increased 104% to $51.4 million from $25.3 million for the quarter ended March 31, 1995. Net income rose to $2.6 million, a 109% increase over the $1.3 million posted for the first quarter of 1995. Earnings per share were $0.43 for the quarter ended March 31, 1996, and $0.36 per share for the year earlier period. Weighted average shares outstanding increased 74% from 3,500,000 to 6,074,000. The increase in weighted average shares outstanding for the quarter is due primarily to the Company's initial public offering of 1,955,000 shares of common stock in June June: see month. 1995 and the offering of 1,630,000 additional shares in January January: see month. 1996, 800,000 of which were issued by the Company.
