BELLSOUTH TELECOMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES NEW CUSTOMER OPERATIONS GROUP

ATLANTA, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Telecommunications (BST) has created a Customer Operations organization consisting of four autonomous customer-focused business groups in a move to better align business functions with customers.
"This change in organizational structure is consistent with our stated objectives to improve market responsiveness and customer services operations," said Duane Ackerman, president and chief executive officer of BST.
Jere Drummond has been named group president - customer operations to head this new organization, and was elected to the BST board of directors. "Drummond's election to the board underscores BST's commitment to providing the highest quality service in an increasingly competitive environment," said Ackerman.
The company's current sales and marketing operations have been realigned to serve four distinct customer segments, with each segment being headed by a vice president, three of which are current officers and one newly elected officer:
-- Interconnection, Public and Operator Services, headed by William
 R. McNair, will handle the service needs of long distance
carriers, wireless carriers and information services providers,
and manage BST public telephone and operator services
 operations.
-- Complex Business Services, headed by Phil Jacobs, who was also
elected an officer, will handle large business customers.
-- Small Business Services, headed by Rod Odom, will handle small
 business customers.
-- Consumer Services, headed by Judi North, will handle residential
 customers.
Together, these four segments will be responsible for all BST sales and marketing functions, including market research and planning, advertising, promotions, sales, service and product management. Additionally, they will manage the business offices, centralized repair call handling, operator services units, and public phone operations.
BST will also form a new Strategic Management unit headed by Sid Boren, vice president. Boren's group is charged with assuring all BST strategies are appropriate for the changing telecommunications marketplace, and that business unit strategies are supporting its overall strategic direction of becoming better aligned with the customer.
