BELLSOUTH INTRODUCES SPECTRUS FAMILY OF VIDEO SERVICES
CHICAGO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Telecommunications today unveiled its new Spectrus(sm) Service family of video services, a line of advanced video options that offers customers real-time video communications through commercial quality transport, multipoint video conferencing and other video network technologies.
The company introduced the new line in announcements made at the SUPERCOMM/ICC '92 trade show this week in Chicago.
The Spectrus Service family of video services introduced by BellSouth includes any general-tariffed video service now being offered, or planned as a future offering, by the Atlanta-based company. Both broadcast and commercial-quality (full-motion) video transport services are included, as well as a multipoint Video Conferencing Service currently under development for availability later this year.
The line also includes Spectrus(sm) Custom Service provided by BellSouth through co-marketing agreements with video equipment vendors, as well as special network designs.
"For several years, we've recognized the growing demand for interactive video conferencing capabilities among our customers," said Rick Coste, video services product manager for BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. "We've tried to meet the demand for all types and qualities of video services through existing tariffs, special assembly tariffs, and a combination of our digital transport services and video equipment provided through our co-marketing vendors.
"The new Spectrus Service family of video services represents our continued commitment to provide complete video solutions, either through tariffed service offerings or by digital applications developed through co-marketing arrangements with other video vendors."
According to Coste, some typical customer needs currently being met by BellSouth for interactive video conferencing include distance learning, video depositions and arraignments, business conferencing applications, and remote medical imaging. The list of potential applications is quite extensive, he said.
The most common applications focus on the need by businesses, schools, healthcare providers and other agencies for interactive video conferencing capabilities in lieu of face-to-face meetings.
BellSouth previously announced agreements with three other video companies that allow the co-marketing of complete videoconferencing systems to customers in the nine BellSouth states.
Last year, the company signed three-year agreements with VideoTelecom Corp. and VIDICOM Inc. Through these arrangements, BellSouth markets its digital services in tandem with VideoTelecom's and VIDICOM's supporting hardware, installation and maintenance and design services.
Earlier this year, BellSouth and PictureTel Corporation announced an agreement to co-market PictureTel's family of standards-compliant video systems in conjunction with BellSouth's digital network services.
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc., with headquarters in Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala., provides unified direction and support for the local telecommunications operations of BellSouth in the southeastern United States.
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. does business as Southern Bell in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and as South Central Bell in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. These companies serve more than 18.1 million local telephone lines and provide local exchange and intraLATA long distance service over one of the most modern telecommunications networks in the world.
