 BELLSOUTH ENTERPRISES TRIALS SHOPPING/INFORMATION SERVICE
ATLANTA, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Enterprises is taking some of the hassle out of shopping with a new around-the-clock shopping and information service it is trialing in the Atlanta area.
The service, CallNow, lets customers shop any time with participating merchants, using the telephone.
CallNow service is a computer-based, voice messaging and advertising service offered through BellSouth Enterprises' companies. With its voice storage and retrieval features, CallNow lets merchants conduct business around-the-clock and update advertising messages quickly and effortlessly. For customers that means being able to call merchants and getting valuable information on promotions, sales and other store details, as well as place orders, at their convenience.
"We can help small, local businesses create and design a customized voice messaging service that lets them have a dialogue with customers 24-hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year," said L.A. Taylor, group president, advertising and publishing, BellSouth Enterprises. "That's particularly important in today's competitive environment, when businesses need to be able to respond to customers' needs immediately. CallNow is an inexpensive, innovative new tool for accomplishing that goal."
More than 630 Atlanta-area businesses have signed up for the CallNow service trial, which will continue until November 1992. Advertisers participating in the program receive a package of services. In addition to the voice messaging capabilities, it also includes advertising support (including outdoor and television campaigns and use of the CallNow logo), a 24-hour customer service hotline, and a monthly comprehensive usage report that summarizes the use of CallNow service.
CallNow can be used by merchants in a number of ways. It can be configured as a 24-hour stand-alone service so that when customers call, they can select from a menu of options that might include current promotions, new product announcements, information on store hours and return policy, etc. It may also include an option that would allow the caller to place an order or transfer to an attendant. It can also be used strictly as an after-hours service with Call Forwarding options.
For example, when a customer calls a merchant with CallNow service they would hear a greeting followed by a request to select from one of the following options: general store information (hours, location, etc.); current specials, sales or other announcements; how to place an order; and after-hours service ("If you'd like to place an order for next-day delivery").
"CallNow service is flexible enough that we can customize it to the unique needs of the merchants," said W.H. Williams, executive director-information services at BellSouth Enterprises. "And our customer service team can assist them in creating their messages, allowing the merchant to devote their valuable time to actually selling.
"What we're trialing is a value-added service that allows merchants, particularly small, local ones, to more effectively market their products and services. And since the telecommunications network is one of the ways the service can be delivered, if the trial is successful, CallNow could be made available across our region, in the smaller towns as well as larger cities like Atlanta," concluded Williams.
BellSouth Enterprises manages a group of companies within BellSouth Corp. (NYSE: BLS) that provide wireless telecommunications and advertising/publishing services around the world.
