BELLSOUTH AND MOTOROLA TEAM UP FOR MICROTAC RSVP TRIAL

ATLANTA, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth's (NYSE: BLS) cellular and paging companies and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced a trial of Motorola's MicroTAC RSVP(TM), a combined cellular phone and pager, in Houston beginning today.
Houston Cellular Telephone Company, a partnership between BellSouth Cellular Corp. and LIN Broadcasting, will provide the cellular service while BellSouth's paging subsidiary, MobileComm, will furnish paging service. BellSouth is the only company in the nation that offers both nationwide paging and cellular service.
Motorola's MicroTAC RSVP is one of the first products to incorporate a cellular phone and numeric digital pager with silent vibrating alert into one piece of equipment.
"We believe there's a tremendous market for a product that integrates paging and cellular features," said Stan Hamm, group president of BellSouth's Mobile Systems. "By making these two valuable wireless services available in one, easy-to-use and lightweight device, we've simplified the customer's life and the communications process as well."
Steve Pazian, president and CEO of MobileComm, said: "This is the perfect marriage between two complementary technologies. For years, people have found it beneficial to use a pager with their cellular phone. This product incorporates the advantages of both services in a convenient package."
"We're pleased to be testing with BellSouth and MobileComm in Houston," said Jim Bernhart, corporate vice president and assistant general manager of Motorola's Pan American Cellular Subscriber Group. "By using our trial units with these systems, participants will be testing the concept with a company with proven track records in both cellular and paging services."
The MicroTAC RSVP looks like the traditional MicroTAC cellular phone, but incorporates a pager to receive numeric messages. The customer presses a few buttons to display the numeric message, including the area code. By simply pressing a single button, the phone will automatically dial the number displayed.
The trial will last approximately three months and will evaluate the technical aspects of the equipment, plus customer response and use.
Hamm added that this product will be a time- and cost-saving device for busy customers. "Customers who normally would have left their cellular phone on to receive calls can now save standby battery life by using the paging component. In addition, the pager enables the customer to make a choice. In many cases, that's a plus in preventing unwanted or unnecessary calling."
Houston Cellular Telephone Company provides cellular service to customers in Houston and Galveston, Texas. BellSouth Cellular Corp. and its partners serve more than 1.6 million customers in 15 states.
MobileComm, based in Jackson, Miss., is a subsidiary of BellSouth Corporation. MobileComm has provided paging and voice messaging service nationwide for more than 20 years. The company and its affiliates have approximately 1.3 million pagers in service.
Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications and electronic equipment systems, components and services for worldwide markets. Products include cellular telephones and systems, semiconductors, defense and aerospace electronics, automotive and industrial electronics, computer data communications and information processing and handling equipment. Sales in 1992 were $13.3 billion.
