BELLSOUTH AND CAE-LINK ANNOUNCE TELEMEDICINE CO-MARKETING AGREEMENT

BELLSOUTH AND CAE-LINK ANNOUNCE TELEMEDICINE CO-MARKETING AGREEMENT
ATLANTA, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) and CAE-Link Corporation today announced a co-marketing agreement that will enable healthcare professionals and their patients to benefit from the efficiences of teleradiology and other remote medical imaging applications.
The agreement allows BellSouth to market its network-based private line and switched voice and data services in tandem with CAE-Link's turnkey hardware, software and systems integration video teleconferencing packages.
Teleradiology is a technique by which X-rays and other image modalities are transmitted over telephone lines using high-resolution monitors, laser scanners and personal computers. Its most common application involves the transfer of radiographic images -- such as a cranial display or chest X-ray -- to distant healthcare locations for diagnosis by consulting radiology specialists.
For example, the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta has a BellSouth/CAE-Link system which transmits X-rays from Dodge County Hospital, 130 miles away in rural Eastman, Ga. The system allows specialists to magnify images and to alter contrast for concentration on areas being examined. The Medical College of Georgia pilot program -- currently being expanded to serve additional remote locations -- also features biomedical capabilities, including electronic stethoscope, EKG and other instruments.
Under the agreement, healthcare professionals throughout the Southeast will now have access to complete-solution teleradiology and telemedicine systems.
"This agreement with CAE-Link and Medical Imaging Systems is illustrative of our interest in providing complete network solutions to our customers," said Rod Odom, vice president-marketing for BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. "Teleradiology has been a rapidly emerging application in the healthcare industry for some time, and now we're meeting that need with an innovative, customer-focused solution."
"Rural hospitals, nursing homes, correctional facilities, military bases and even mobile crisis centers can now routinely tap the expertise of high-level medical specialists," noted Ed Field, CAE-Link's vice president for training operations. "The technology of telemedicine can greatly improve the quality of patient care, as well as healthcare training, while decreasing costs for travel and facilities."
BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc., with headquarters in Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala., provides unified direction and support for the local telecommunications operations of BellSouth in the southeastern United States.
