The ARC Hand Bell Choir and Chime Choir will be hosting its 15th Annual Holiday Musical Benefit, and there's not a better, more uplifting show in town.

ARC stands for Activities for Retarded re·tard·ed

 Children, and the choir -- which is booked solid for events through Christmas -- is made up of adults with Down syndrome Down syndrome, congenital disorder characterized by mild to severe mental retardation, slow physical development, and characteristic physical features. Down syndrome affects about 1 in every 730 live births and occurs in all populations equally. .

Most of them have known each other since they were kids more than 35 years ago. Their moms used to take them to a little park in Studio City to play together because the other kids didn't want to play with them.

``Our children were called Mongoloids back then,'' says Mary Shallert, whose daughter, Suzie, is 39 now, and a member of the ARC bell ringers.

``The doctors told us they would never walk, talk or have a life of their own. The doctors were wrong.''

Exactly how wrong you can see for yourself. The holiday show starts at 3 p.m. at the school, 3700 Coldwater Canyon Ave., in Studio City. Tickets can be purchased at the door. For more information, call ARC at (818) 762-4365.

 Sgt. Cathy Ryan, is undergoing lengthy treatment for cancer. Cathy's fellow officers are hosting the car washing/barbecue to help the couple, who have six kids, through some tough times.

``Cathy's used up all her sick and vacation time to take care of Andy, and recently someone got their PIN number and emptied out their bank account,'' said Sgt. Marty Fentress, who has organized the benefit. ``They're part of our law enforcement family, and it's important for us to do everything we can to help lift their spirits during some tough times.''

If you want to help the Ryans out and meet some local police officers washing your car and grilling you a burger, the event will be held behind the West Valley Library, next to the West Valley community police station, 19036 Vanowen St., Reseda.

A donation of $5 for a car wash and $5 for lunch is being requested.

And finally, Reseda American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 308 will be opening its doors to the public for a holiday dinner/dance and fundraiser starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at 7338 Canby Ave., Reseda.

The facility was built in 1927 with the mission of assisting war veterans, and almost 80 years later, it's still doing just that.

Post members are active in visiting and helping veterans receiving medical services at both the Sepulveda and West Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, a neighborhood of Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles (region), a popularly identified region of Los Angeles, incorporating the neighborhood above
 VA hospitals, and helping sponsor the ROTC programs at both Reseda and Cleveland high schools.

Before the doors open to the public for the holiday dinner on Dec. 17, the post will host a special holiday party for 150 hospitalized veterans they have driven over to the post from local VAs.

``We're also strongly committed to providing a community gathering place,'' said post commander John Mika. ``We're available for meetings, educational programs, cultural events and youth services.''

If you can't make it, but want to buy a ticket and sponsor an active military member, ROTC cadet or homeless vet, give the post a call.
