BELLINI JUVENILE FURNITURE CHALLENGES CONSUMER REPORTS; SAYS ALLESSANDRO 2000 CRIB ADHERES TO FEDERAL STANDARDS

ENGLEWOOD, N.J., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Bellini Juvenile Furniture, Inc., the Englewood-based distributor of fine children's furniture, today announced it is challenging a recent Consumer Reports story that has questioned the safety of its popular Allessandro 2000 (Allessio) crib.
The article, which appeared in the Consumer Reports May 1993 issue, questioned the compliance of the Bellini Allessio crib's dropside release latches. According to Bellini Vice President Irving Freedberg, the publication failed to mention that this mechanism was tested and approved by the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as by the independent United States Testing Co., as far back as 1984.
Additionally, Freedberg said, it is Bellini's opinion that Consumer Reports misstated the government requirements regarding the mechanism in question. The regulation under Federal Hazardous Substances Act, with which the Allessio crib's dropside release latches comply, clearly states:
"Locking or latching devices used to secure dropside rails shall require a minimum force of 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds) to activate the release mechanism or shall consist of a double action device requiring two distinct actions to release."
 According to Freedberg:
"The Allessio complied with the latter option, and that design was approved and marketed accordingly. During the nine years the Allessio has been on the market, we have not received a single complaint about the release mechanism's safety and have never been notified of any injuries that have been incurred by it.
"Bellini's intention is and has always been to comply to government safety regulations. If the Consumer Product Safety Commission at any time decides to change existing regulations that relate to the Allessio or any of our products, we will cooperate with them fully and ensure our products meet their guidelines."
