BELLES OF THE BALL FEMALE HEADLINERS CAN'T WARD OFF CONCERT GRINCH.

on Friday night was billed by promoters as the best yet and a showcase for current female artists.

However, after a night filled with delays in getting stages changed for the next performers, one was left with the feeling of waking up Christmas morning and finding that stocking on the fireplace mantel Fireplace mantel or mantelpiece, also known as a chimneypiece, originated in medieval times as a hood that projected over a grate to catch the smoke. The term has evolved to include the decorative framework around the fireplace, and can include an elaborate designs  filled with coal.

of midnight that top-billed Britney Spears, nearly 90 minutes late, climbed atop a set of stairs on a stage filled with gift box props.

Yet three songs into her performance that concluded with ``Me Against the Music,'' Spears and her dancers dashed off so fast it was almost like she didn't want to pay her waiting limousine driver overtime.

Even a guest appearance by Jennifer Lopez in a set of slacks and a bikini-style top didn't generate much heat. She told KIIS-FM morning man Rick Dees she doesn't have much going right now in the way of musical projects, and he spared her any questions about ex-beau Ben Affleck.

Lopez stretched the crowd's imagination, though, when she told Dees the fans were anxious for her to get off the stage so they could see Jessica Simpson.

As for Beyonce, she showed that when it comes to singing she's no Jessica Simpson. She was the clear star of the evening, appearing before the crowd after a set of seven electronic boards showed her face on numerous magazine covers, then changed to spell out her name.

Beyonce, with six Grammy nominations, can get into the same vocal stratosphere stratosphere (străt`əsfēr), second lowest layer of the earth's atmosphere. The level from which it extends outward varies with latitude; it begins c.5 1-2 mi (9 km) above the poles, c.6 or 7 mi (c.  as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. She did just that with ``Dangerously in Love,'' which came as the only encore performance of the evening.

, can't be faulted for her enthusiasm. She acts both on and off stage like she's still auditioning for ``American Idol American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition, which began its first season on June 11, 2002. Part of the Idol franchise, it originated from the British reality program Pop Idol. ,'' not just enjoying the fruits of being the show's first winner.

Clarkson began with a rousing performance of ``Miss Independent'' and joked with the crowd after the second time she nearly tripped on stage clutter. Unlike Beyonce, Clarkson is still learning when to take a little bit off the high notes so as to avoid stripping a song of its tender lyrical moments.

As for Hilary Duff, her song list included the radio favorite ``So Yesterday.'' But the title also in some ways describes how she already sounds in her young career.

The men had their moments as Sean Paul got the crowd on its feet with ``Shake That Thing.'' Fabolous managed to connect with the audience with ``Keepin' It Gangsta'' but sang too loud to satisfy. Simple Plan's best song of the night was ``Addicted.''

There were no defining moments in this year's Jingle Ball, unlike in 2002 when Kelly Osbourne picked fans from the audience to join her in singing ``Papa Don't Preach.''

The concert also couldn't top KIIS-FM's female lineup for Wango Tango Wango Tango is an annual day-long concert produced on by KIIS-FM [1] radio station in Los Angeles. Blige, Pink, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, and Celine Dion.

However, for all the glitches Friday night, the radio station deserves credit for having a constant eye on diversity. In contrast, KROQ-FM's annual Almost Acoustic Christmas this weekend does not have a single female headliner head·lin·er
