BELLCORE CONTRIBUTION TO SMDS INTEREST GROUP SPECIFIES SMDS OVER ATM

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A significant step toward making SMDS the first "connectionless" ATM service was taken recently with the contribution by Bellcore of technical specifications for the carriage of SMDS traffic over ATM to the Technical Working Group of the SMDS Interest Group (SIG).
Bellcore's contribution specifies the protocol interface to be used when one or more virtual connections within the ATM User Network Interface (UNI) are configured to support SMDS. "This contribution is consistent with and leverages work done in the ATM Forum on the ATM UNI and on the ATM B-ICI (Broadband InterCarrier Interface) specifications," noted Elysia C. Tan, chair of the SIG's Technical Working Group.
According to Tan, when this contribution is supported by vendors, SMDS service features and service characteristics will remain unchanged, and this new ATM-based SMDS access interface will be fully interoperable with existing cell-based and frame-based SMDS access interfaces.
SMDS is a public packet-switched, connectionless data service being offered by telecommunications carriers that provides flexible any-to-any connectivity for local area network (LAN) internetworking and for remote client/server computing. SMDS provides mesh connectivity without the expense of dedicated, point-to-point connections. SMDS is ideal for organizations looking for cost-effective wide area network (WAN) connectivity -- without all the complexity and cost of maintaining a mesh of virtual or physical wide-area links.
"This specification allows customers to take advantage of currently available public service offerings, while ensuring that they will be able to take advantage of future ATM deployment by carriers," Tan noted.
The U.S. and European SMDS Interest Groups and the ATM Forum have reached agreement on a plan to work on the SMDS over ATM specification among the three groups. The goal of this plan is to ensure that the three groups agree to a common SMDS over ATM interface. This would simplify vendor implementation and carrier deployment of this interface and ensure international compatibility.
