BELL-JEFF INVITATIONAL: HELP COMES FROM HOOPS MONROE EARNS SECOND PLACE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

If Monroe High of North Hills captures its first City Section boys' cross country title since 1973 in November, the Vikings can thank the basketball team for its fortunes.

Junior Manuel Ruiz Manuel Ruiz Pérez (born December 3, 1962 in Jerez de la Frontera) is a Spanish football coach and former player.

During his football career, he played for several clubs including his childhood club Xerez CD, UD Melilla and Sanluqueño.

Monroe, lifted by the 1-2 finish of Ruiz and senior Juan Guzman, gave Belmont a scare in placing second to the Sentinels 38-45 Saturday in the Division I race at the 28th annual Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America. .

Ruiz timed 14 minutes, 41 seconds for the meet's fastest time, running unchallenged over the 2.9-mile course that started and finished by the Greek Theater and traversed dirt equestrian trails.

Ruiz's mark moved him into a tie for 20th fastest on the all-time course list despite competing in temperatures that rose into the 90s. In the process, Ruiz also won handily hand·i·ly

Manuel Ruiz's potential seems unlimited. He was born and raised in Toluca, Mexico, at an altitude of more than 7,000 feet. Ruiz moved to North Hills a year and a half ago with his brother, Aleph 1. (language) ALEPH - A Language Encouraging Program Hierarchy.

Ruiz placed seventh in the City cross country final and moved into the role of City Section cross country favorite by winning the 3,200 meters during track season.

``I just came to do my best,'' Ruiz said. ``I didn't know how we would do as a team. If everybody does their best, then maybe we might beat Belmont.''

Monroe could not have asked for more from its top three. Guzman was second in 14:59 and senior Daniel Guido was fourth in 15:26. Junior Armando Bonilla (16:18) and senior Davie Carranza (16:43) rounded out the scoring in 13th and 25th, respectively. The Vikings' team time of 1:18.09 for its five scoring runners was more than a minute faster than Belmont (1:19:13), but the Sentinels pulled out the victory with five runners among the top 11.

``We're going to have a shot at being in the top two,'' 36th-year Monroe coach Dean Balzarett said. ``Who knows by the end of the year? We may be the best? I would say off this race, we're really going to be good.''

Monroe's success might be linked to the development of first-year runners Guido, Bonilla and Carranza. Jhordane Acosta, who is projected to be among the top five, did not run Saturday because of a knee injury. By the City championships, Balzarett is optimistic op·ti·mist

``I kind of thought that we could have beat them last year,'' Guzman said. ``This year, I think we have a chance. We just wanted to run a good time today. That's what matters to us. The guys work hard at it and like we did today. We have a chance to beat them.''

La Canada and Desert Christian of Lancaster swept boys' and girls' team titles in Divisions III and V, respectively.
