BELL ATLANTIC STATEMENT ON DOWNSIZING WORK FORCE
/NOTE: Several radio and wire service reports in the last few

days suggest that Bell Atlantic is downsizing its work force.
These reports are not completely accurate. As the following statement emphasizes, the corporation is examining the issue of downsizing but has no firm plans.
Bell Atlantic would appreciate it if any media covering this story would keep this point in mind.
 Please call with any questions./
ARLINGTON, Va., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL) issued the following:
All major American companies are finding that they must increase their productivity if they are to remain competitive, and Bell Atlantic is no exception. We must continue to find ways to lower the cost structure of our operations.
We are examining various methods for lowering our cost structure, including downsizing, and we have advised the leadership of the CWA (Communications Workers of America) and IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) of the possible need for downsizing.
The company has no hard and fast plans, nor do we have firm numbers as of yet.
If Bell Atlantic determines that we have to further downsize the work force, we intend to make every effort to do so by using voluntary methods -- just as we have in the past. For example, in December 1991, 3,200 managers left the business voluntarily under an early retirement plan. Last fall, 172 associates of the C&P Telephone Company of Virginia left the payroll under the income security plan, which is part of our collective bargaining agreement.
We want to emphasize that we would hope to be able to use voluntary methods if we downsize this year.
