BELL ATLANTIC SIGNS AGREEMENT WORTH $5M AS TRIMBLE NAVIGATION SYSTEMS INTEGRATOR

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 2 ~PRNewswire~ -- Bell Atlantic System Group Inc. and Trimble Navigation Limited (NASDAQ: TRMB) jointly announced today that they have signed a multi-year agreement for Bell Atlantic to act as an Authorized Systems Integrator for Trimble's GPS-based vehicle tracking system products for advanced fleet management systems.
The Trimble Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) subsystems are based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite technology developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. The Trimble equipment will be integrated by Bell Atlantic into complex fleet management systems to expedite vehicle responsiveness in several markets.
"We are very pleased to be teamed with the leader in commercial GPS and satellite-based vehicle tracking to pursue what is clearly one of the fastest market growth opportunities," said Jeffrey S. McDermott, president, Bell Atlantic Systems Group Inc. "Now that the satellites can provide position information 24 hours a day, the market is opening very quickly for any fleet application that can get value from faster responsiveness and service."
According to Charles R. Trimble, president, Trimble Navigation Ltd., "We appreciate the confidence expressed by Bell Atlantic in our company and we are excited to have them working with us to pursue vehicle fleet management opportunities."
 Terms of the Agreement
Under the agreement, which could have a potential value in excess of $5 million over a two-year period, Bell Atlantic will offer Trimble's vehicle-mounted location sensors and map displays to customers in emerging markets. Trimble will supply equipment enabling dispatch center personnel to determine the location and status of all vehicles in the fleet. This knowledge greatly enhances resource utilization and provides critical information to make potentially life-saving decisions.
 How Vehicle Tracking Works
Vehicles in each fleet are equipped with radios, modems and GPS location sensors, which keep track of the vehicle's latitude, longitude, speed, heading and time of day. All the vehicles are linked to a dispatch center through a conventional or trunked radio system or other mobile communication system. High resolution color workstations and software are installed at each Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) seat to show the dispatcher the location of the vehicles on an electronic map. These displays indicate street names, routes, landmarks, destinations or other features previously determined to be of value by individual dispatchers.
