BELL ATLANTIC SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH INTEL TO EXPLORE PC TELECONFERENCING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic announced today it has signed an agreement with Intel Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: INTC) for the companies to work together to explore applications for PC users such as audio, data and video conferencing.
The agreement provides a framework for the companies to work together to integrate standard PCs and phones, the two most common tools found in a typical office, and to enable real-time data, audio and video conferencing, also known as "electronic meetings."
Later this year, Intel will introduce PC add-in boards and software under the Intel brand name. These PC enhancement products will enable data conferencing over standard telephone lines and video conferencing over integrated services digital network (ISDN) lines provided by the Bell Atlantic operating telephone companies. ISDN, which is an integral component of the proposed products and services, carries simultaneous voice, data, graphics and video over a single telephone line nearly 27 times faster than regular telephone service.
"Our customers need the services this venture will provide -- video and audio conferencing as well as data transfer at the desktop," said Ray Smith, chairman and chief executive officer, Bell Atlantic. "We believe this technology will ultimately make videoconferencing over personal computers as commonplace as the analog phone call is today."
"This agreement and cooperation will allow us to combine the richness of the PC and real-time communication capability of the telephone to yield a powerful communications tool," said Intel Senior Vice President Frank Gill. He added that with these capabilities, workers in remote locations could see each other and work on the same document and therefore increase their productivity.
Bell Atlantic is the nation's most aggressive large-scale deployer of ISDN. By the end of 1994, Bell Atlantic telephone companies will provide access to ISDN capabilities in 87 percent of their network. The telephone companies serve the densely populated mid-Atlantic region, which includes Washington and the New York- Philadelphia corridor, where the demand for information technology is high. They provide 18.2 million access lines to business, residential and government customers.
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent company of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware) and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of one of the nation's largest cellular carriers and of companies that provide business systems services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support and financial services, throughout the United States and internationally. In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company, is also a leading supplier of PC enhancement products. Intel is an international manufacturer of microcomputer components, modules and systems.
