BELL ATLANTIC OPENS UP FASTER, EASIER CREDIT APPROVALS FOR WIDE RANGE OF
 RETAILERS
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bell Atlantic telephone companies announced two services today that will make point-of-sale credit card authorizations faster for customers and less expensive for retailers. The companies made the announcement at the 1992 POS Today trade show in San Diego.
The two services -- Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ ISDN (integrated services digital network) service and 950 dialing service -- when used in conjunction with local and long distance data networks, offer efficient cost effective ways for the retail industry to automate point of sale credit authorizations.
Today, many retailers have to make a direct call to a credit authorization service to verify a credit card. Using either a private line or the public network, the process can take 30 seconds or more. Retailers using the Bell Atlantic services will be able to reduce the transaction time and telecommunications charges. The credit authorization process can be reduced to about 5 seconds with ISDN and 8 to 12 seconds using the 950 dialing option.
"The Bell Atlantic companies now are supplying ISDN on a pilot basis to a major U.S. credit processor and its retail clients," said Bob Baublitz, market manager -- Bell Atlantic market manager, financial markets. "The pilot, launched in May and still in progress, has verified the services' ease of use and fast processing time. The companies plan to make the services generally available early in 1993."
The Bell Atlantic ISDN and 950 dialing services both can connect directly to Bell Atlantic's Public Data Network (PDN) service, a local packet switched data service designed for applications such as credit authorizations. With either service, scattered locations in a given local area can each use a single number for reaching the PDN service and aggregate their traffic on the data network to gain economies of scale.
This application marks the first time that the Bell Atlantic telephone companies have provided 950 dialing service (also known as "Feature Group B service") to customers other than interexchange carriers.
Bell Atlantic's ISDN and 950 dialing service options conform to a Bellcore-developed service concept for transaction processing communications called Transaction Switching and Transport Services (TSTS). TSTS protocols address various aspects of transaction processing services in order to make them easier for national credit processors to use. Nationwide plans for TSTS were discussed at the 1992 POS Today trade show.
