BELL ATLANTIC ISDN 'DATABASE-ON-A-DISK' GOING LIKE HOTCAKES; FREE DISKETTE MAPS OUT COMPANY'S ISDN DEPLOYMENT

ARLINGTON, Va., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Companies in the mid-Atlantic region that are considering the use of ISDN now have an innovative new tool to help their planning: a free ISDN "database-on-a-disk" that shows when and where the service is being offered.
Bell Atlantic, the nation's most aggressive large-scale deployer of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), developed the diskette to help customers plan their ISDN deployment.
Six hundred of the free diskettes have been distributed since they became available a little over a month ago, according to Pat D'Innocenzo, Bell Atlantic's ISDN product applications manager.
Those requesting the diskettes range from individual consultants to Fortune 500 companies and include ISDN applications developers, data communications equipment distributors, retailers, systems integrators, and alarm companies, he said.
The diskette offers quick and flexible access to information about ISDN availability, based either on geographic location or on the area code and prefix of a given telephone number.
"When we first demonstrated the diskette at the National ISDN Alliance Summit in May, we received a standing ovation from the audience," D'Innocenzo noted.
One recent user of the diskette -- a customer of IBM Networking Systems in Research Triangle Park, N.C. -- was so happy with it that he insisted that IBM tell Bell Atlantic. So Rob Ayres, ISDN product planner for IBM Networking Systems, called Bell Atlantic and let them know: "My customer's thrilled with that diskette of yours."
Ayres' customer had been gearing up to have ISDN deployed for data communications on tens of thousands of company phone lines across the United States. The diskette enabled the customer to begin planning ISDN deployment in the Bell Atlantic region first.
Ayres termed Bell Atlantic's diskette, the first of its kind in the industry, "the most helpful aid that I've seen in planning a large ISDN network."
A technology that multiplies greatly the power of a telephone line, ISDN has been embraced by the telephone industry at large and is being widely deployed, but at different rates of speed.
In the mid-Atlantic region, Bell Atlantic has made it easy for customers to plan to use ISDN. "This diskette can help any business that wants to find out where ISDN is available in our region," D'Innocenzo said.
ISDN is an all-digital network that integrates voice, data and image services on a single telephone line. Applications for ISDN include telecommuting, electronic imaging, automatic call distribution, desktop video conferencing, collaborative computing and LAN access and interconnection.
Bell Atlantic expects to have ISDN available to 87 percent of its customer base by the end of 1994.
Bell Atlantic will provide the 3.5-inch IBM-compatible ISDN database-on-a-disk free of charge to anyone who sends a written request to Pat D'Innocenzo, Bell Atlantic, 13100 Columbia Pike, C21, Silver Spring, Md. 20904.
