 BELL ATLANTIC FORMS STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
 TO MARKET ISDN BUSINESS APPLICATIONS
ARLINGTON, Va., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic today announced formation of strategic alliances with five telecommunications hardware and software applications providers for the joint marketing of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) business applications.
The five alliance partners are Ascend Communications, Inc.; Gandalf Systems Corp.; Hitachi America, Ltd.; Sun Microsystems, Inc.; and Unifi Communications Corp.
The alliances are intended to provide Bell Atlantic's business customers with total communications solutions using ISDN, an all- digital network that integrates voice, data and image services on a single telephone line.
The five alliance partners are among a number of companies with which Bell Atlantic has been working on a variety of ISDN applications including automatic call distribution, desktop video conferencing, collaborative computing and LAN access and interconnection.
The alliance agreements formalize those relationships. Bell Atlantic plans to sign similar agreements with additional applications providers in the months ahead.
The agreements call for products and services using ISDN to be marketed primarily through joint sales calls, trade shows and in-house demonstrations.
"We want to give our business customers faster access to a wider r ange of communications solutions involving ISDN," said Myles Mendelsohn, assistant director-business development for Bell Atlantic Network Services, Inc., who is heading Bell Atlantic's ISDN alliance effort. "We think forming alliances with companies that can provide innovative solutions is the best way to do that."
Bell Atlantic's local operating companies have been equipping their switching offices with ISDN capability for the past few years as part of an aggressive network modernization effort. Bell Atlantic expects to have ISDN available to nearly 50 percent of its customer base by the end of 1992, and to nearly 90 percent of its customer base by the end of 1994.
Tariffs that make ISDN a standard option for Centrex customers are in place in five of the company's serving areas (Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia). Similar tariffs are expected to be in place in Bell Atlantic's two other serving areas (Delaware and New Jersey) in the third quarter 1992.
Tariffs for single-line business (Basic Rate ISDN) and Primary Rate ISDN (for customers moving large amounts of information all the time) are scheduled to be filed by year's end.
The ISDN offerings are named Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ BRI digital service for Basic Rate Interface and Bell Atlantic IntelliLinQ PRI digital service for Primary Rate Interface.
Bell Atlantic's ISDN deployment coincides with National ISDN-1, a movement by the nation's local telephone companies, interexchange carriers and hardware and software developers to set uniform ISDN specifications and to speed the deployment of ISDN services nationwide.
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware), and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies serving Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of companies that provide wireless communications in the Mid-Atlantic region and business systems and services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support, and financial services, throughout the United States and internationally.
In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world, and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
