BELL ATLANTIC ANNOUNCES MARKET TRIAL OF VIDEO DIALTONE SERVICE

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Video programmers and other information service providers will soon have the chance to test their wares with up to 2,000 customers in northern Virginia, as part of a Bell Atlantic market trial of video dialtone service.
The trial is scheduled to begin March 1, 1994, subject to necessary approvals, and is expected to last for six months. The market trial is an extension of a technical trial that began last year.
During the trial, C&P Telephone Company of Virginia, a Bell Atlantic subsidiary, will continue to use Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology to deliver compressed video signals over existing copper telephone lines. C&P will provide a basic transport service coupled with an entry level gateway that will allow customers to access any programmer that offers service during the trial.
Bell Atlantic is encouraging video programmers and other information service providers to participate.
Those who sign up will have an opportunity to test their services -- as well as viewer interest -- in a realistic market environment.
Bell Atlantic will hold a day-long seminar for interested programmers to be held Dec. 10 at 1320 N. Courthouse Road in Arlington.
Bell Atlantic will conduct an open enrollment period through the end of the year for programmers interested in the trial. The company plans to establish a Video Dial Tone Sales Center by January 1994, to assist programmers.
Bell Atlantic Video Services (BVS), a separately incorporated affiliate of C&P, will participate in the trial as a programmer. Other programmers can purchase video dialtone service on the same non- discriminatory terms as BVS as outlined in the FCC tariff that will be filed for the trial.
