BEI ELECTRONICS REPORTS SALES AND EARNINGS
FOR THE THIRD QUARTER AND FIRST NINE MONTHS OF FISCAL 1992
SAN FRANCISCO, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- BEI Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII), a San Francisco-based diversified technology company, today reported sales and earnings for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 1992 ended June 27.
In making the announcement, Peter G. Paraskos, president and chief executive officer, said that third quarter sales were $34,382,000 compared to the $41,086,000 posted in the same period of fiscal 1991. Net income was $1,858,000 a decrease from the $2,080,000 reported for the third quarter of the prior year. Earnings per share were $0.27 in the third quarter of fiscal 1992 as compared to $0.31 recorded in the third quarter of fiscal 1991.
For the first nine months of fiscal 1992 sales were $109,596,000, up slightly from the $108,906,000 reported in the prior year. Net income increased 14.5 percent to $4,584,000 from the $4,004,000 posted in the same period of fiscal 1991. Earnings per share were $0.67 in the first nine months of fiscal 1992 as compared to the $0.60 reported in the first nine months of fiscal 1991, an increase of 11.7 percent.
"While sales for fiscal 1992 as compared to fiscal 1991 show modest growth, the results for the third quarter of fiscal 1991 are somewhat skewed due to the unusually high volume of shipments of BEI Defense Systems Co.'s HYDRA 70 rocket motors, warheads and components in that quarter compared to the first and second quarters of fiscal 1991," Paraskos said. "Sales results for the third quarter and nine months of fiscal 1992 reflect strong shipments of BEI Systron Donner Inertial Division's patented micro-miniature quartz sensors and systems," he added.
Paraskos stated that "net earnings for fiscal 1992 have steadily increased; however, income for the third quarter was down in comparison to the same quarter of the prior year as a result of the unusually high third quarter of fiscal 1991 shipment volume in the Defense Systems Co. not being repeated, as well as the impact in fiscal 1992 of the loss of government business and component sales due to defense budget cutbacks and the general economy. Net earnings for the nine months," he said, "increased primarily due to expense controls implemented by BEI earlier in the year and reduced interest expense resulting from lower interest rates and the reduction of outstanding debt."
During the third quarter of fiscal 1992, BEI Defense Systems Co. was awarded a $48 million contract by the U.S. Army to be the prime system contractor for the HYDRA 70 rocket system. "This major contract places the company in an excellent position for future domestic and international sales as well as to continue its world leadership in rocketry," Paraskos stated.
Earlier this month BEI completed its initial entry into the health care market with the acquisition of Meditron Devices Inc., a New Jersey- based manufacturer of electrosurgical instrumentation. "The acquisition of Meditron, which has annualized revenues of approximately $3 million, is both an initial and strategic step in diversifying BEI's business base into health care," Paraskos said.
BEI Electronics designs, manufactures and markets a wide variety of sensors and control systems and components for use in commercial, industrial, medical, military and aerospace applications, in addition to defense ordnance and systems. For fiscal 1991 BEI reported sales of $146 million. The company has major operations in California, Arkansas, Texas and Massachusetts.
