BEI ELECTRONICS NAMES WILLIAM G. HOWARD JR. TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS, REPLACES D.P. BOOTHE JR., WHO HAS RETIRED

 SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- William G. Howard Jr., has been named to succeed D.P. Boothe Jr., who has retired, on the board of directors of BEI Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEII), a San Francisco-based diversified technology company, it was announced today by Charles Crocker, chairman of the board.
 Dr. Howard is an independent consulting engineer with clients in microelectronics and technology-based business-planning areas. Prior to beginning his consulting practice, he served with the National Academy of Engineering as senior fellow from October 1987 to December 1990. His Academy duties focused on studies of factors affecting the competitiveness of private industry, especially the realization of new products. While at the Academy, he was on leave from Motorola, Inc.

 Boothe was a BEI director since 1983. Since 1981, he has been president of his own privately held investment company, Boothe Holdings, Inc. He currently serves as a director and chairman of the board of Vacu-Dry, Inc. He is a graduate of Stanford University with an A.B. degree.
 Dr. Howard joined Motorola's integrated circuits operation in 1969 as manager of linear integrated circuits research. He served in a variety of technical and business-management positions within the company's semiconductor and corporate infrastructure. His most recent assignment was as senior vice president and director of research and development for the corporation.
 Dr. Howard is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he also served as an assistant professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is the co-author of "Basic Integrated Circuits Engineering" and of "Profiting from Innovation."
 Dr. Howard is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
