BEHEMOTH DAZZLES THROUGH EVOLUTION.Byline: VAUGHN FORTIER-SHULTZ, GN BY VAUGHN FORTIER-SHULTZ GENERATION NEXT For their ninth studio album, Evangelion, Polish metal wizards Behemoth continue to do what they've always succeeded at: Evolve. Ever since their excellent 1999 album Satanica, Behemoth has been changing their music style with each record. It's been difficult to classify the amalgamation amalgamation /amal·ga·ma·tion/ (ah-mal´gah-ma´shun) trituration (3). amalgamation ( of styles that the band plays; elements from thrash thrash - To move wildly or violently, without accomplishing anything useful. Paging or swapping systems that are overloaded waste most of their time moving data into and out of core (rather than performing useful computation) and are therefore said to thrash. metal, death metal and black metal have been apparent on every album they've released this century. So where does Evangelion fit in? It's apparent from the mood-setting opening track "Daimonos" that Behemoth has almost completely abandoned the traditional black-metal sound of classic albums such as Sventevith and Grom or even their excellent Storming The Pagan Vastlands demo (definitely worth downloading). This new sound is full of blast beats Blast beat is a drum beat made with rapid alternating or coinciding strokes primarily on the bass and snare drum. The snare drum and hi-hat/cymbal forms the focus of such a beat, with bass drum often played beneath the snare to create a 'wall of sound'. , crushing riffs, and the harshest vocals Nergal (yeah, laugh at his name) has ever recorded. The sound is not unlike a crazy hybrid of Job For A Cowboy cowboy Horseman skilled at handling cattle in the U.S. West. From c. 1820, cowboys were employed in small numbers on Texas ranches, where they had learned the skills of the vaquero (Spanish: “cowboy”). , Impaled Nazarene and Nile. Lyrically lyr·i·cal adj. 1. a. Expressing deep personal emotion or observations: a dancer's lyrical performance; a lyrical passage in his autobiography. b. , Evangelion draws heavily from the Bible; the album art itself is a rendering of the Great Harlot of Babylon. The songs contain less of the heathen-themed content found on earlier works such as the EP And the Forests Dream Eternally. Despite the complete shift in style from their earlier work, I believe fans of their old material will enjoy this album just as much.
