BEER, BOWLING TWO REASONS TO LOVE L.A.

Byline: Gregory J. Wilcox Daily News Staff Writer

Living in L.A. doesn't come cheap.

But some of life's little pleasures sure do.

Like brewskies and bowling.

A six-pack of premium beer (either Miller or Bud in this case) retails for $3.99 in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , well below the national average of $4.24.

And the city's bowlers are spared a big strike in the wallet, paying an average of $1.79 a game, the lowest of 25 major urban centers.

This good news comes courtesy of the research arm of the America Chamber of Commerce, which surveyed the cost of 59 goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Consumption of goods and services is assumed to produce utility (unless the "good" is a "bad"). It is often used when referring to a Goods and Services Tax.  in 325 U.S. cities during the third quarter of 1996.

Overall, the cost of living in Los Angeles was 19.7 percent higher than the national average. But it is more expensive to maintain digs in New York New York, state, United States

So say so long the that dark economic cloud that hovered over our heads for the first part of this decade.

``Tales of Los Angeles' economic demise in the early 1990s not only were greatly exaggerated, but they ignored the wonderful attributes we enjoy in terms of quality of life,'' said Jack Kyser, chief economist The Chief Economist is a single position job class having primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and production of economic and financial analysis. It is distinguished from the other economist positions by the broader scope of responsibility encompassing the  for the Economic Development Corp. of Los Angeles County.

The economy has made such a vibrant rebound that Kyser found himself analyzing the city's beer bargains Monday, rather than discussing business flight.

And even the beer prices should send a signal to the rest of the country that L.A. is indeed the place to be.

``This is a cutting-edge market,'' Kyser said. ``The beer people are beating each other on the head to lead in Los Angeles. That tends to send the message that it's a good product.''

He also notes that housing prices here are lower than in the aforementioned cities.

As for the bowling bargains, it's a lot like the old real estate mantra mantra (măn`trə, mŭn–), in Hinduism and Buddhism, mystic words used in ritual and meditation. A mantra is believed to be the sound form of reality, having the power to bring into being the reality it represents.  of location, location, location Location, Location, Location is a popular Channel 4 property programme, presented by Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer. ``I know that bowling is a year-round sport here, whereas in a lot of places in other parts of the country it's not,'' said R.R. Corderman, editor of Garden Grove-based Pacific Bowler, a trade publication. ``In the Midwest and East they like to bowl in the colder months because it's an indoor activity.''

In some colder parts of the country, bowling alleys close in the summer, which could contribute to higher prices, he said.

Guess we've really got something to smile about.
