BED-TAX PROPOSAL MAY GO TO VOTERS.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

BURBANK - The City Council is expected to decide today whether to ask voters next April to approve a 2 percent increase in Burbank's bed tax.

The city now levies a 10 percent bed tax on hotels, inns, motels Motels may refer to any of the following:

  • The Motels, an American new-wave band.
and tourist homes, generating about $4 million per year. Anticipating more budget woes next year, the city wants to boost the tax to 12 percent, which would generate an additional $800,000 for the general fund.

Burbank officials said if the bed tax were raised it would have little financial impact on the community, since it is generally paid by tourists and travelers.

``It wouldn't have that much impact on the residential community,'' said Derek Hanway, financial services The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.

 director.

Hanway said he does not expect visitors to go elsewhere if Burbank increases the tax. ``When you book a room, do you look around for cities that have a lower tax rate? I know I don't,'' Hanway said.

But Tony Garibian, general manager of the Safari Inn and the Coast Anabelle Hotel, two hotels about a block apart on West Olive Avenue, said a 10 percent tax is high enough. Pasadena charges about 12 percent, but it has a convention center and Burbank does not, Garibian said. He added that the bed tax comes up often in negotiations with travel agents and tour operators.

The proposed tax increase is part of the city's effort to bridge an anticipated $2.9 million shortfall Shortfall

In June, the City Council voted 3-2 to increase the parking tax charged at Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

City Councilman Dave Golonski said he is leaning toward voting against placing the bed-tax increase on the April 2005 ballot.
