BECK LOVES TO JUGGLE CHALLENGES.

Maybe, after the graduation ceremonies and family celebrations wind down, Davis Beck of Moorpark High can take some time this summer to rest and think about all she accomplished.

But then again, she will probably be too busy playing softball.

``I've pretty much done it my whole life, going through all these different sports,'' said Beck, who also played varsity soccer and tennis this year and will participate in Monday's Daily News All-Star Game. ``I like the challenge. Each sport has its own challenges, and they each have their own rewards.''

Unfortunately, the softball season didn't hold many rewards for Beck and the Musketeers. The team won just one game in the Marmonte League, even though Beck, a speedy outfielder who will play at UC Santa Barbara next season, hit .316 and scored 11 runs.

``I'm afraid that we weren't able to showcase her very much,'' longtime Moorpark assistant coach Steve Lopez said. ``We tried to, we moved her down to the No. 2 spot (in the batting order).

``I've seen a lot of girls come through the high school, and I have no doubt that she has the potential to play at the next level, if she's not ready right now. We just didn't do very well as a team.''

Beck said UC Santa Barbara, which was 30-21 last year and set a school record for victories in a season, will be a good fit for her style of play.

``I've talked to the coach, and they are going to kind of change their game plan in the next couple years,'' Beck said. ``They have been kind of a power team, but they are switching to more of a quick lineup with speed. They are going to be real competitive.''

In which case, Beck is already a perfect fit. Beck, who also served as Moorpark's senior class vice president this year, spent last fall preparing for soccer season when a friend talked her into playing tennis.

``It was just practice for a while, and then they were saying, `You know, you could make the team if you tried out,' '' Beck said. ``Tennis was a lot more easy-going because I was new and it was my first year on varsity and I didn't have to take it all that seriously.''

From tennis, it was on to soccer, and then softball, with no rest between seasons.

``It's fun,'' Beck said. ``Softball is probably my favorite, but I love them both so much. I like soccer because of the mental aspects of it, and I've always played softball since I was little.

``It's tough sometimes, but it doesn't really wear me down.''

The toughest part for Beck was Moorpark's 1-13 league record, made even more frustrating by the fact that nine of the losses were by one or two runs.

``Davis started a little slow,'' Lopez said, ``but from the middle of the season on, she was great. We've moved her around a little bit, but she responded well to everything.

``She has extraordinary speed, she has a strong arm and she always gets a good jump on the ball. She's been a great player.''
