BECHTEL SOFTWARE AWARDED MINNESOTA STATE CONTRACT
SAN FRANCISCO, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Bechtel Software Inc. (BSI) has been awarded a contract by the Minnesota State Board of Technical Colleges (SBTC) to develop a department/college scheduling system for its 34-campus system.
John Schultheis, vice president and manager of BSI's Advanced Software Group, said the primary purpose of the new scheduling system will be to provide a tool for developing, tracking, and maintaining schedules at both the college and department levels.
"Bechtel's selection for this project was based on its expertise in managing knowledge-based system projects and, specifically, the development of commercial-grade scheduling applications," said Barbara Herrmann, instructional design and delivery specialist with SBTC.
She added that maintaining accurate schedules for courses, classrooms, and instructors represents a monumental task under the board's existing manual, computer-assisted method. Each SBTC campus in Minnesota has an average of 150 full-time instructors and 1,200 course titles.
"The new system represents the culmination of several years planning to automate the scheduling process within a technical college campus and between campuses in the regional groups," Herrmann said. "It will provide our users maximum flexibility in scheduling and will drastically reduce the workload of both administration and faculty in performing this task."
Bechtel's design for the system includes a PC-based delivery platform, in either a stand-alone or network environment. The application will include an intuitive user-interface with pop-up windows and a flexible scheduling feature which will allow the user to manipulate the schedule based on a range of input options. The system is being developed following an object-oriented approach in C++, which will facilitate easy maintenance and future enhancements. A Paradox database will also be integrated for persistent storage of data and schedule information. The Bechtel Software project is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 1992.
Bechtel Software is a subsidiary of San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp., one of the world's foremost engineering, construction, and project management organizations. BSI is a leading provider of engineering and project management software, as well as custom-advanced software development, consulting, and training services. Through its Advanced Software Group, BSI has completed more than 60 knowledge-based systems projects and delivered more than 30 applications to date. The Group also has developed THE EDGE (Expert Document Generation Environment) (TM), a "smart" document generation software system that enables users to automatically assemble and produce "bullet-proof" drafts or final versions of business-critical documents. Additionally, BSI has pioneered the development and implementation of KADS OBJECT(TM), a proprietary object-oriented design methodology for modeling KBS applications. The systems developed by BSI leverage the use of KADS OBJECT and other advanced software development tools and are integrated with conventional programs to provide commercial-grade, cost-effective solutions.
BSI has been in operation since 1987 and has offices at Bechtel's headquarters in San Francisco and Tokyo, Japan.
