BECHTEL'S BILL FRIEND TO CHAIR NACME BOARD; WORLD LEADER IN ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION IDENTIFIES DIVERSITY AS BUSINESS IMPERATIVE

NEW YORK, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- W.L. "Bill" Friend, an executive vice president and director of Bechtel Group Inc. (BGI), a world leader in the engineering and construction business, has been elected the new chairman of the board of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), effective immediately, Bechtel announced today.
Edward E. Hood Jr., vice chairman and executive officer of General Electric Co., passing the gavel after a two-year term, will continue to serve as NACME chairman emeritus.
"Bechtel's global interests have made us 'user-friendly,'" said Friend. "As one of the world's largest and most diverse engineer- constructors, we've had a long-term commitment to ensure that this is a company in which people of diverse backgrounds are comfortable and have real opportunity. And we have recognized that diversity is a business imperative based on the demographics of the workforce and the expectations of many of our customers."
NACME, the nation's largest private source of scholarships in engineering for African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians, is a not-for-profit corporation committed to diversifying the nation's technical workforce.
"Bill Friend is a distinguished leader in the engineering field who brings a global perspective to the direction of our board at this crucial time in NACME's growth," said President George Campbell in congratulatory remarks at NACME's board meeting on Dec. 10.
Friend is a member of the executive committee of BGI and executive sponsor of Bechtel National, the San Francisco and Los Angeles Regional Offices, the Mining and Metals Special Operation, the Bechtel Technology Group, Information Systems and Services and Procurement. He is also chairman of Bechtel Canada and serves as executive sponsor for Latin America and Bechtel's Technical Excellence and Work Execution Excellence Cornerstones.
The Bechtel organization has provided professional engineering and construction services in some 135 nations on all seven continents.
"We are delighted to enhance our partnership with Bechtel, a company that has been a significant NACME supporter for more than 20 years, starting with Steve Bechtel Jr., a NACME founder and continuing with leadership in the recent development of our Corporate Scholars Program," Campbell said.
"I'm honored and proud to serve as NACME's chair," said Friend. "I feel a timeliness, even urgency, about NACME's mission as diversity in our society increases. And I identify in a very personal way with NACME, and the young people it serves because I too had to work my way through school.
"I have great respect for the accomplishments of the organization and its president, George Campbell, as well as the leadership of Ed Hood. Ed has effectively joined GE's 'benchmarks and best practices' corporate policy with NACME's emphasis on quality. I too am a strong advocate of 'best practices sharing' and 'continuous improvement,' as we call it at Bechtel. I look forward to working closely with Ed and with George as NACME continues to forge new partnerships with students, educational institutions and corporations."
The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, widely known for its scholarship programs and its research, also develops and operates precollege and university programs and publishes a broad range of materials to educate students and increase public awareness of engineering education issues.
