PALMDALE -- The Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
, dubbed ``Aerospace Valley,'' is playing host to two exhibitions of aviation art.

Palmdale and Lancaster are taking turns hosting works from the American Society of Aviation Artists. In the first exhibition, which will open today at the Palmdale Playhouse, 18 works from the society's founders will be on display through Friday.

On Saturday, an exhibition featuring 50 other works will begin at the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery.

With the Antelope Valley having two Air Force bases and a civilian flight test center, the artists have a perfect backdrop for their works.

``It's good to be in a place with so much interest in aviation,'' said Keith Ferris, one of the society's founders. ``It's a good place to hang your aviation art.''

The society's goals are to bring together artists with an interest in documenting aviation and aerospace history for the enjoyment and education of the general public. The society was founded 20 years ago by Ferris, Bob McCall, Jo Kotula, R.G. Smith and Ren Wicks.

``Palmdale is certainly a community that celebrates its aerospace heritage, and I believe it is fitting for the group to meet here for their 20th anniversary,'' said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford.

Ferris, an artist for nearly 60 years, has more than 50 works in the Air Force's art collection and two murals in the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) of the Smithsonian Institution is a museum in Washington, D.C., United States, and is the most popular of the Smithsonian museums. It maintains the largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft in the world. .

Among Ferris' works on display in Palmdale is one called ``Inspection Party,'' depicting Emperor penguins he saw milling around a C-141 Starlifter The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a military strategic airlifter in service with the United States Air Force. Introduced to replace slower piston-engined cargo planes such as the C-124 Globemaster II, the C-141 was designed to requirements set in 1960 and first flew in 1963.  cargo aircraft A cargo aircraft is an airplane designed and used for the carriage of goods, rather than passengers. ``You go in and soak up everything you can,'' Ferris said about producing works for the Air Force art collection. ``You come back and say: If I had to paint one thing, what would it be? Anybody who's been to McMurdo remembers the penguins.''

The Palmdale Playhouse gallery, 38334 10th Street East, is open from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. The aviation art can also be viewed by appointment by calling (661) 267-5684.
