BEATLES EXHIBITION SETS OUT ON WORLD TOUR AS 'LOVE ME DO' IS RE-RELEASED
LONDON, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- As the Beatles' first hit record, "Love Me Do," is re-launched today to mark the thirtieth anniversary of its release, the British Council has announced an international Beatles exhibition to tour 56 countries across all five continents.
The tour, sponsored by Thorn EMI, will run from now until the end of 1993. It can be seen in the U.K. at what was once The Cavern in Liverpool, where the Beatles played their first gigs, then in Manchester and Glasgow, before setting out on a trans-continental route which will take it to from Colombo and Caracas to Dubai and Dar es Salaam.
The exhibition traces the group's history from their formation in the late 1950s, through their dramatic rise in the 1960s, until their official break-up in 1970, and includes previously unseen archive material from the band's business and personal contacts.
Love Me Do, first released on EMI's Parlophone label, was the beginning of the Beatles phenomenon, its success marking the first of more than 400 weeks that the Fab Four were to spend in the U.K. charts. Next month (November 2) EMI is to release The Beatles CD Singles Collection, which includes all 22 original singles.
Another event being marked today at Thorn EMI's Abbey Road Studios, where Love Me Do and other Beatles' hits were recorded, is a new, authoritative book on the Beatles, The Complete Beatles Chronicle, by Mark Lewisohn. The book, which is the result of 13 years of research, reconstructs every day of The Beatles' working life, from 1957 to 1970.
