Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 is known for its high temperatures, but residents unable to get to the beach or a pool can still find cool spots.

The nearness of trees, the orientation of a neighborhood to the mountains and a nice breeze can make all the difference between suffering and relief.

Burbank is one area that consistently has temperatures 10 degrees cooler than parts of the West Valley, said Bruce Rockwell, spokesman for the National Weather Service. Valley Village and Sherman Oaks residents said the presence of trees in their neighborhoods also cools their streets.

``None of these places are real cool, but they're not quite as hot as the others,'' Rockwell said.

Dan Schroeder, 60, plays softball at McCambridge Park in Burbank with a team made up of members of his Glendale church.

``We like playing here because, no matter how bad it is, there seems to be a little bit of a breeze,'' Schroeder said. ``Makes it tolerable.''
