The area girls' basketball landscape has undergone many changes in the past year, but one thing remains the same: Hart High of Newhall again will be the team to beat.

The Indians lost All-American Ashlee Trebilcock to graduation, but they still possess two Daily News All-Area honorees and retain the No. 1 ranking.

Hart's Taylor Lilley and Tatianna Thomas are among few All-Area players returning to local courts this season. And some of the best coaches have moved on, too.

The entire All-Area first team graduated, as did four second-teamers and 10 who received honorable mention. Raquel Alotis, who guided Chatsworth to the City Section final and was the Daily News Coach of the Year, heads south to become an assistant at El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Lilley is joined at Hart by Daily News All-Area honorable mention Tatianna Thomas, a transfer from Alemany of Mission Hills, giving Dave Munroe's Indians a solid nucleus despite the loss of Trebilcock, a three-time Daily News Player of the Year.

Without Trebilcock, the Indians will move the ball more on offense, and Lilley will play the point occasionally. They also can emphasize a pressing defense because Munroe won't have to worry about wearing out Trebilcock.

The Indians, who beat a solid Westlake team 54-42 Dec. 10 in the Buena-Kiwanis Tournament, are a strong favorite in the competitive Foothill League. Valencia, which shared the league title with Hart last year, lost three All-Area selections.

Hart and Valencia were 9-1 and the only schools to finish above .500 in league play, although five of six Foothill teams received playoff play·off also play-off

Westlake, the defending Marmonte champion, remains among the area's top teams despite losing three starters to graduation. Williams, a junior center, led the team with averages of 10 points and 11 rebounds per game last season. Scardino, a senior guard, averaged 10 points, 5.1 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

``We lost some key senior leaders, but we should still contend for a league title this season,'' Westlake coach John D'Agostin said. ``We'll need to rely on younger, talented, but inexperienced in·ex·pe·ri·ence
