BEAR SEEN IN CAMP BEFORE ATTACK : ANIMAL'S NIGHTTIME VISITS CONCERNED COUNSELORS.

Byline: Marni McEntee Daily News Staff Writer

The day before a black bear attacked a sleeping boy at an Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  camp, counselors had contacted game wardens asking for advice about a bear that had made several nighttime visits.

A state Fish and Game biologist gave staff members at Camp Singing Pines advice about warding off bears, and had planned to visit the camp Friday, agency spokesman Larry Sitton said.

But the bear returned to the camp early Wednesday morning, clawing 8-year-old Juan Valle as he slept on a cot.

Snare and traps set by game wardens had not yet caught the troublesome bear Friday, Sitton said.

Wardens had used hounds to track the bear Wednesday night, cornering it several times. Since then, however, they have lain in wait, monitoring the baited traps for the bruin's return.

``There was no information on their part that there was a concern for anyone's safety,'' Sitton said.

Camp director David Myers said some of Valle's stitches were removed Friday and he remains at his South Central Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  home with family.

``He doesn't remember the attack. He remembers waking up and having the bear on him,'' Myers said.

The camping program is run by UniCamp, a UCLA-sponsored charity for children from low-income families.

Myers said he was satisfied with the way the incident was handled by the Department of Fish and Game.

``They gave us good advice and we followed that advice but unfortunately the bear didn't,'' Myers said.

UniCamp plans to resume the program next week, as long as the bear is caught. Some youngsters have canceled, but Myers said some of the kids who missed the last three days of their session want to join the next session.
