BEAR HIT BY TRUCK ON 126; DEATH IS THE FOURTH IN AS MANY MONTHS.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

A 400-pound bear was killed early Wednesday morning when it was hit by a trucker on Highway 126, the fourth bear to be hit on the rural road in the past four months, officials said.

Experts say a recent fire in the area might be driving the California black bears in search of new habitat.

About 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the male bear wandered onto the highway just east of Fish Hatchery hatchery

Moore said Wednesday's incident was the fourth time a bear has been hit on the highway, which stretches from Valencia to Ventura, passing through orchards and bordering the Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. A brush fire in the spring near Piru could be driving bears and other wildlife from forested areas toward Piru and Fillmore, officials said.

``It happens periodically,'' said Cockrill. ``It's not necessarily common, but it's not uncommon.''
