JavaOne 2001

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2001

AltoWeb and BEA BEA - Basic programming Environment for interactive-graphical Applications, from Siemens-Nixdorf.  will preview the first example of J2EE applications with built-in Web Services (1) Loosely, any online service delivered over the Web. Such usage appears in articles from non-technical sources, but not in IT-oriented publications, because definition #2 below describes the correct use of the term.  at this year's JavaOne(SM) Conference, June 4 through 8, at the Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .

These J2EE applications will be running on the AltoWeb(R) e-Business Platform and BEA WebLogic(R) Server. The demonstrations will take place during the extent of the conference at the BEA Systems, Inc. booth (No. 815) and at the AltoWeb, Inc. booth (No. 818). AltoWeb is a BEA Star Partner.

The JavaOne demonstrations will show how the BEA WebLogic(R) Server and AltoWeb e-Business Platform enable developers to rapidly build a broad range of e-business applications, such as supply chain, retail, and intranet applications, and then deliver them as Web Services.

According to Chris James, AltoWeb's Corporate VP of Marketing, "Web Services will help deliver e-business integration. But more is needed than just UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) An industry initiative for a universal business registry (catalog) of Web services turned over to the stewardship of OASIS in 2002 as the version 3 specification of UDDI was released. , WSDL (Web Services Description Language) An XML-based language for defining Web services. Developed by Microsoft and IBM, WSDL describes the protocols and formats used by the service. , and SOAP. Companies need Web Service applications. They need to integrate to existing systems, build new business logic that supplements the existing applications, and then expose this combined solution as Web Services."

"J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems.  is the defacto platform for these new applications. The AltoWeb e-Business Platform has already enabled several companies to take advantage of the power of J2EE, connect to existing systems, and build new applications in weeks. What we're showing at JavaOne is how AltoWeb lets companies deliver Web Service applications without writing a single line of WSDL or SOAP. These demonstrations are a great opportunity for developers and managers to see how Web Services fit into the enterprise," concludes James.

According to Dirk Coburn, IDC's Director of Java and XML XML
 in full Extensible Markup Language.

Markup language developed to be a simplified and more structural version of SGML. It incorporates features of HTML (e.g., hypertext linking), but is designed to overcome some of HTML's limitations.
for Ebusiness, "Web Services--what IDC calls Service-Based Integration--is the great new frontier of e-business automation. The deployment of Web Services can offer many advantages for businesses including productivity, cost-efficiency, intelligent business processes, and competitive advantage, that cut time and cost out of e-business projects. If applied to a J2EE application server environment, such as the WebLogic Server, the advantages of Web Services extend to include the optimal integration of heterogeneous computing platforms."

"However, like any new frontier, the freedom of Web Services needs a framework of order and structure to achieve its potential. Its architecture carries the potential for bewildering be·wil·der

complexity. For example, there are two or more J2EE-compliant paths for many system solutions. And often those paths differ more than just incrementally. Therefore, businesses should seek out a platform to corral corral

a management system in which range cattle are put into corrals and fed hay for a period when the environment is most
the Web Service potential. In my review, the AltoWeb e-Business Platform provides the needed framework, and thus can turn the wide open Web Services landscape into e-business opportunity," concludes Coburn.
