BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2003

Susan M. Steele, vice president of BE&K Construction's Industrial Services Division was a featured panelist at the 2003 National Petrochemical & Refiners Association Annual Meeting. The topic, "Who's Responsible for Developing the Future: Owners or Contractors?" was addressed by one owner and three contractors company representatives.

Steele's presentation on the panel focused on the importance of training and professional development of workers and the responsibility for supporting the associated costs that owners must accept. "If we don't invest in our workforce, make a solid investment in their future careers, they will simply leave the construction industry," she said. "A scarce workforce affects both owners and contractors. Benefits, wages, and training are critical to ensure a quality project is delivered on time and on budget

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts 1,000,000 new jobs will be available for skilled construction workers by 2005. BE&K has developed innovative programs that range from a school of industrial construction and summer construction skills camp for high school girls High School Girls (女子高生 Joshi Kōsei  to on-site craft training and a Gold Key status program that guarantees eligible employees consistent work.

The National Petrochemical and Refiners Association meeting attracted about 1600 attendees from two-dozen countries, including company officers and representatives from every state in the union.
