) ("BD") today announced it has named Robert M. Hallenbeck Vice President and General Counsel, effective January 1, 2000. This election follows the previously announced retirement of John W. Galiardo as General Counsel on December 31, 1999.

 Mr. Galiardo, "Bob is ideally suited to be BD General Counsel at this time in the growth of the Company. He brings to the role a solid legal perspective enhanced by a broad involvement with BD businesses, in particular his in-depth understanding of our diagnostics and bioscience technologies. Mr. Hallenbeck will have overall responsibility for the Company's Law Group, Government Relations, Ethics and Business Practices, and Environmental Affairs and Safety. Mr. Hallenbeck joined BD in 1987 as a Patent Attorney, and spent six years in several roles of increasing responsibility in the Intellectual Property Department. In 1993, he was named Associate General Counsel and in February of this year, Assistant General Counsel.
