Texas came up just short and California appears headed to the Rose Bowl, or maybe better, as the Bowl Championship Series' second-to-last rankings showed little movement at the top.

No. 4 California is breathing easier despite leading No. 5 Texas by just .0013 points. If the Golden Bears comfortably defeat Southern Mississippi, they should go to the Rose Bowl, leaving Texas out of the BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957.  mix.

The Longhorns didn't gain enough ground despite their victory over Texas A&M.

Here's where it gets tricky: What happens if USC, Oklahoma or Auburn lose this weekend?

If the Trojans lose, they knock Cal out of the Rose Bowl, and the Bears would need to finish in the top two and play for the national title to ensure a BCS bowl game.

If Oklahoma loses, it would send Colorado to the Fiesta Bowl The Fiesta Bowl, now sponsored by Tostitos tortilla chips (a Frito-Lay product), is a United States college football game played annually since 1971.  the top three to win, securing the Bears a trip to the Rose Bowl.

Or hoping two of the top three lose, which might allow the Bears to slip into the Orange Bowl as one the top two teams and play for the national championship.

None of this affects Utah's BCS situation.

The Utes are expected to remain No. 6, which guarantees them a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. Non-BCS conference schools are guaranteed an at-large berth by finishing in the top six.

As expected, Georgia leapfrogged Boise State and currently claims the No. 7 spot, effectively ending the Broncos' hopes of a BCS bowl, barring a rash of upsets.
