Monty as president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO) The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president. of the Corporation, succeeding Ronald W. Osborne, who has been president, BCE Inc. since May, 1996. Monty was previously vice-chairman and chief executive officer, Northern Telecom Limited. His new appointment is effective Oct. 1, 1997. McLennan who is retiring. McLennan will continue to serve the BCE Group in a senior advisory capacity. Osborne's appointment is effective Sept. 24,1997. L.R. Wilson, chairman and chief executive officer, BCE Inc. has advised the BCE board of directors that he plans to retire as chief executive officer on May 6, 1998 following the Annual Shareholders Meeting. Monty will succeed Wilson as chief executive officer, BCE Inc. at that time. Wilson will continue as chairman of the board, BCE Inc. Wilson praised McLennan's contribution at Bell Canada: "John McLennan John McLennan (1821-December 18 1893) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Glengarry as a Liberal-Conservative member of the Canadian House of Commons from 1879 to 1882. has provided inspired leadership at Bell during a period of unprecedented change.
