BC youth custody centre closing. (Child & Family).


CAMPBELL RIVER -- B.C.'s Lakeview Youth Custody Centre will close this fall. The main reasons for the closing are:

* The province's youth crime rate continues to fall;

* Community-based alternative programs and other treatment services are working to rehabilitate re·ha·bil·i·tate

2. To restore to good condition, operation, or capacity.

Lakeview, which has operated in Campbell River since 1978, is an open custody centre and does not have the level of security of the Victoria Youth Custody Centre to deal with secure custody and remanded youth. The youth at Lakeview will be transferred to existing centres. To ensure an adequate open-custody capacity is maintained on Vancouver Island Vancouver Island (1991 pop. 579,921), 12,408 sq mi (32,137 sq km), SW British Columbia, Canada, in the Pacific Ocean; largest island off W North America.
