While training at the Justice Institute of B.C., volunteer leaders learn how to create effective volunteer teams in their community and manage reception centres that may serve the needs of hundreds of disaster evacuees, such as those that occurred in the vast forest tires that swept across the province in 2003. Emergency Social Services, a program funded by the Ministry of Human Resources, delivers essential services such as food, lodging, clothing, registration and emotional support during emergencies such as tires, floods or earthquakes. Approximately 5,000 ESS volunteers are in place in 150 communities through out the province.
