BC legal aid tries to replace services closed by budget cuts. (Justice).


VANCOUVER -- The Legal Services Society The Legal Services Society (LSS) is the legal aid provider in British Columbia, Canada. Its mission is to help low-income people solve their legal problems by providing a spectrum of services that promotes their effective participation in the justice system.  has replaced legal aid offices closed because of provinical funding cuts with a system of regional centres, local agents and a toll-free telephone line.

Following a cut of almost 40% legal representation is still provided for:

* family cases involving domestic violence or a parent threatening to permanently move their children out of the province;

* child apprehension matters;

* criminal cases where conviction is likely to result in imprisonment Imprisonment

People can apply for legal aid and get legal information through seven regional centres operated by the Society, 18 local agents--private bar lawyers funded by LSS--and a call centre. The Society is still trying to find local agents for six additional communities.

The toll-free call centre is focusing on poverty law and legal problems for which representation is unavailable. Regional centres and most local agents provide LIS LIS - Langage Implementation Systeme.
