BC TELECOM puts ISDN anywhere within rugged Canadian province.ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 1997-- CONKLIN BRITEmux meets demand for videoconferencing, other services ISDN ISDN in full Integrated Services Digital Network Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media. multiplexing is allowing BC TELECOM to bring the communications benefits of ISDN -- once limited to the largest cities -- to some smaller towns in British Columbia British Columbia, province (2001 pop. 3,907,738), 366,255 sq mi (948,600 sq km), including 6,976 sq mi (18,068 sq km) of water surface, W Canada. Geography , Canada. By purchasing BRITEmux from CONKLIN, BC TELECOM is now able to meet the growing demand for ISDN access from homes and businesses as part of a drive to expand ISDN availability. This gives BC TELECOM a new source of revenue and new opportunities for customer service. With access to ISDN service, companies can now link remote offices together with videoconferencing and high-speed data access. It also enables individuals higher speed access to the Internet. "The CONKLIN BRITEmux is particularly beneficial in small towns with fewer than 5,000 phone subscribers where it's not currently economical to add ISDN capabilities to existing central offices," said Terence Gill, services planning engineer at BC TELECOM in Vancouver. "We can run out the service on non-loaded lines, and we have extension technology available for customers on long loops." As one of the first ISDN multiplexers introduced, the CONKLIN BRITEmux provides eight ISDN lines from a single T1. CONKLIN BRITEmuxes come in a variety of compact configurations to easily fit into available space within a remote DLC (1) (Data Link Control) See data link and OSI. Its plug-and-play installation reduces set-up costs by about 40 percent. "An appealing feature of the CONKLIN BRITEmux was its compact size," said Gill. "We can provide eight ISDN lines at once and preengineer them. Once the demand for an ISDN line comes on-line, we can automatically assign the line without any further engineering. All we have to do is provision the loop at the end." BC TELECOM has equipped all of its Nortel DMS (1) (Document Management System) See document management. The purchase of the CONKLIN BRITEmuxes are part of a move to expand ISDN coverage, particularly in areas served by GTD-5 remote switches, which will not be ISDN capable until sometime in 1998. The CONKLIN BRITEmux family, consisting of Models 357, 358 and 359, can be used within remote DLCs or similar enclosures, at central offices or within office buildings ("network premises").
