THE BBC yesterday announced its intention to move half its employees out of London in the next 10 years -with theNorth West in prime position to benefit. Corporation chairman Michael Grade set out a nine-point plan for the next decade which included a series of sweeping changes at the corporation. The manifesto for the future pledged to reform the way the BBC is governed and put the emphasis back on quality programming. But the most important announcement for Merseyside could be the plan to move hundreds of staff out of London during the next decade and invest pounds 1bnin centres outside the capital. The announcement was warmly welcomed by the North West Development Agency (NWDA)and North West Vision, the region's film and TV development agency. Liverpool,Manchester and the rest of the North West, which is 30% cheaper to film in than London,are seen as ideally placed to exploit the opportunities that the BBC's announcement could open up for independent production companies. Just last week -in anticipation of the BBC's plans -theNWDA confirmed the first wave of investment for North West Vision's RegionalAttraction Fund. It is hoped the money will help secure the North West's position as the main production centre for TV outside London. More than 7,000 people work in the region's film and TV industry and 2003 was the busiest filming year yet, withNorth West Vision dealing with over 6,000 filming enquires.
