BAZE'S TIME COULD BE COMING SOON.

Byline: KEVIN MODESTI Horse Racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with

ARCADIA - Jockey Tyler Baze Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982 in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. Born into a racing family, both of his parents were jockeys as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Russell Baze. , first in the Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
standings and fourth on the national earnings list, still drives the Nissan he had when he broke into the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  circuit in 2000.

``He's a country boy,'' says Ivan Puhich, agent for the Washington state native. ``He cares more about his dogs than his car.''

It's the same on the track as it is on the road for Baze, who wins as much as anybody with the high-mileage horses in the everyday races but hasn't found a four-legged luxury vehicle to symbolize his success.

Don't Get Mad could become the sweet ride Baze deserves if the 3- year-old colt wins Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000.  to earn a parking spot at the May 7 Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby

One of the classic U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. It was established in 1875 and run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Ky. With the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, it makes up U.S. racing's coveted Triple Crown.
.

The Ron Ellis-trained horse can improve after coming out of recent second- and third-place finishes with excuses, a slow pace that blunted his rally in the San Vicente Stakes The San Vicente Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. The race is open to horses, age three, willing to race seven furlongs on the dirt and carries a purse of $150,000.

The great racing filly, Busher, won this race against males in 1945.
and a hard track that worked against him in the San Felipe San Felipe (săn fəlē`pā), pueblo (1990 pop. 1,557), Sandoval co., N central N.Mex., on the Rio Grande; founded early 18th cent. The inhabitants are Pueblo of the Keresan linguistic family. Ceremonial dances are held there in spring and winter. .

``He ran awesome,'' Baze, a Monrovia resident, said after the San Felipe. ``The next race is the main one. The next race, the Santa Anita Derby, (is) where I think he'll get it done.''

Baze, 22, part of the racing family that produced Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze Russell Baze (born August 7, 1958 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) is the second-most winningest jockey in the history of Thoroughbred horse racing and a member of the United States Racing Hall of Fame. , has won Grade I stakes but has yet to make a mark on the Triple Crown trail. Indian Express, in 2003, has been his only mount in the Santa Anita Derby (second to Buddy Gil) and Kentucky Derby (14th behind Funny Cide).

Puhich, 79, who books Baze's mounts, said it's ``partly my fault.''

``He's probably the best young rider in America,'' said Puhich, who insists Baze will be a Hall of Famer someday. ``But I want to establish him first (before seeking more high-profile mounts). People think this is an overnight thing. I tell Tyler, 'You have to ride five years before you really know how to ride.'

``His time is coming. But all the other jocks are in their 30s and 40s. Tyler is an infant.''

Baze missed Thursday's races after falling during a morning workout. Puhich said Baze was ``body sore,'' but X-rays showed no breaks, and he should be back today.

Don't Get Mad is the 7-2 second choice behind 7-5 Sweet Catomine, who will try to be the fourth filly to win the Santa Anita Derby. The 11-horse race includes Wilko, trying to bounce back to Breeders' Cup Juvenile-winning form in his second start of 2005, and Giacomo, another hoping for a surface and pace more conducive to his come-from-behind style.

--Of interest: In large part because nine-time Santa Anita Derby winner Gary Stevens will be at Keeneland, only one winning jockey from the past 18 runnings of the race will participate Saturday. That's Jose Valdivia Jr., a winner with Castledale in 2004 and rider of A.P. Arrow this year.

Wilko and Sweet Catomine will be the first winners of the Breeders' Cup's 2-year-old races, the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies, to race against each other.

Jeff Mullins, who saddles Golden Gate Derby The Golden Gate Derby is a race for thoroughbred horses run each year at Golden Gate Fields at a distance of one and one sixteenth of a mile and open to three-year-olds. A Grade III event, also known as the California Derby, it offers a purse of $100,000.  winner Buzzards Bay, can become the first trainer to record a Santa Anita Derby three-peat. Mullins won with Buddy Gil and Castledale the past two years.

This will be the first Santa Anita Derby with a female horse (Sweet Catomine), jockey (Tammi Piermarini on Allright) and trainer (Kristin Mulhall with Wannawinemall).

Giacomo is named after the son of rock singer Sting, a friend of owner Jerry Moss, co-founder of A&M Records.

Go Coyote Joe is the first Santa Anita Derby entrant in 38 years for trainer Warren Stute, 83, who had Prince of Plenty (seventh to Royal Attack in 1962) and Field Master (ninth to Ruken in 1967).

--Elsewhere: Bellamy Road, owned by George Steinbrenner, is the morning-line favorite over Going Wild for Saturday's Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

After Steinbrenner switched trainers from Michael Dickinson to Nick Zito, Bellamy Road won a Florida allowance race by 15 3/4 lengths with jockey Javier Castellano.
