BAYER BLOOD GLUCOSE TEST STRIPS NOT AFFECTED BY DIAGNOSTIC SOLUTIONS INC. RECALL

TARRYTOWN, N.Y., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent report in The New York Times cited "dangerous" levels of inaccuracy with blood glucose test strips manufactured by Diagnostics Solutions Inc. of Irvine, California. These blood glucose test strips were intended by Diagnostics Solutions Inc. to be used in the GLUCOMETER(R) 3 Blood Glucose Meter, manufactured by Bayer Corporation, Diagnostics Division (formerly Miles Inc.) and the One Touch(R) System, manufactured by Lifescan Inc. of Milpitas, California.

Bayer Corporation restated today that only test strips produced by Bayer can guarantee accurate and reliable results with Bayer blood glucose meters.

The GLUCOMETER(R) 3 Diabetes Care System is one of several products marketed by Bayer Corporation that is designed to allow people with diabetes to monitor their blood glucose levels. Bayer Corporation recommends only GLUCOFILM(R) Test Strips be used with the GLUCOMETER(R) 3 Diabetes Care System.

According to Dr. Robert L. Habig, Vice President, Clinical, Medical, and Regulatory Affairs, Bayer Corporation, only the "test strips manufactured by Diagnostic Solutions Inc. are affected by this recall." Test strips affected by the recall are marketed under the following brand names: Quick Check(TM) 3, Relief Plus, Valu-Rite Family Pharmacy, MK Medical, Perry HealthCare, Brooks, Top Care, Full Value, Health Mart, Brite Life, Long 5, Giant Eagle, Qualitest and Good Neighbor.

Habig stated that the "GLUCOFILM(R) Test Strips marketed by Bayer undergo an extensive system of quality control to assure their accuracy and reliability. Bayer's GLUCOFILM(R) Test Strips are not involved in or related to problems associated with test strips manufactured by Diagnostics Solutions Inc. Bayer's record of quality and reliability has long been a standard in the industry."
