Redwood City hoofers will be asked to line up immediately after the 57th annual Independence Day Celebration parade, which has drawn 100,000 spectators in recent years.

Organizers of the contest, which is co-sponsored by the KSAN country music station in San Francisco, want at least 4,000 dancers to stick around and shake their stuff to the ``Cowgirl Twist,'' with moves along the lines of the old Chubby Checker dance.

About 10,000 fliers about the event have been snatched up already,'' coordinator Peter Van Beckum said. ``We're setting up a huge stage, and we'll have a helicopter filming from overhead.''

Line dancing - which is a choreographed set of dance steps performed in a line to country music - is one of the most popular forms of dancing today, said dance teacher Jamie Hogan, who will lead the dance line.

``We are in one of the hottest pockets for line dancing, here on the Peninsula. I came from Arizona, and it's hotter here,'' Hogan said.

The parade and line dance is sponsored by the nonprofit Peninsula Celebration Association, which is springing for a 15-piece band and stage for the contest.

The line dance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Middlefield, between Jefferson and Winslow streets behind Sequoia Station shopping center.

After a brief lesson on how to perform to the 32-count routine, and with help from dance monitors interspersed throughout the crowd, the line must step lively in unison for at least five minutes to set the record.
