BAY AREA EMBRACES NATIONAL DANCE WEEK.

SAN FRANCISCO--After last year's National Dance Week passed without so much as a lifted foot, a group of Bay Area dancers, administrators, and presenters got together to see whether they might put the spotlight on Bay Area dance during this year's National Dance Week. A loosely organized committee, Bay Area Celebrates National Dance Week 1999 (BACNDW), was formed, which, according to project coordinator Leah Wolf, decided early on that their members would commit to a three-year process, "not to create a new event but to showcase the rich variety of Bay Area dance."

The celebration will start on Saturday, April 24, with the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Merce Cunningham by Mark Morris during the Cunningham residency at Cai Performances. It will end on May 2 with Anna Halprin's Circle the Earth, an all-day planetary dance on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County.

The Isadora Duncan Awards Ceremony, held April 26 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in addition to presenting sustained achievement awards, will offer a showcase of local dance and honor last year's accomplishments by the area's dancers, choreographers, and their collaborators. For the first time the ceremonies will include a post-performance reception at a local hotel.

The linchpin, however, of BACNDW activities will be a series of open studios, classes, showcase performances, and open rehearsals that will take place throughout the week. Modeled after the popularly acclaimed Open Studios by Bay Area visual artists, these activities will be free and open to the public. A brochure will guide the interested to the eighty or so studios and ensembles that have signed up.

There will be opportunities to sample dance lessons from modern to tap, zydeco to belly dancing, Balinese to Morris, kathak to flamenco. San Francisco Ballet will open two of its advanced classes for observation as will the School of San Jose Cleveland Ballet and the Limon West Dance Project. San Francisco Dance Center will present two weekends of choreography showcases. Among others, Steven Pelton will offer an evening of work and the Joe Goode Performing Group will present a season. Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company and Dimensions Dance Theater will take over the Bayview Opera House for their collaborative Common Ground, and Axis Dance Company will open the rehearsal of its new work by Joanna Haigood. If this National Dance Week celebration does nothing else, it will certainly showcase the fact that dance in the Bay Area is big.
